FINDING THE PLACE INSIDE me where my binding magic lived was becoming easier and easier.

In my very first magics class, the instructor told us that everyone has a mental map of his or her own body, a sense of where it is in the world. Propioception is the technical term. But at least one of the instructors called it somatic mapping.

In my somatic map, my binding energy sat in my heart, coiled and pulsing, ready to use.

To my surprise, tapping into that energy this time made my pendant flare a bright green.

I didn’t know if this had happened before—I couldn’t remember it, but I realized that I’d had my eyes closed for much of the previous pack-binding ceremony. That had been the whole pack—the Academy pack. This, with the exception of Layla, was the pack of my heart.

And even Layla wasn’t all bad, I had to admit.

I realized for maybe the first time ever that just because someone was one of the good guys didn’t mean I actually had to like them.

For that matter, just because Jolie technically belonged to the Lusus Naturae, it didn’t mean that I had to dislike her.

As it turned out, there were as many shades of gray in the supernatural world as there were in the mundane human world.

One by one, I let my magic reach out, touch the members of my new pack, slide over their faces as if these iridescent, incorporeal green tentacles truly were arms with hands at the end.

Then, one by one, the tentacles moved to some spots on each person’s body—mostly on the torso, but in slightly different places, as if my magic were reading their somatic maps and tapping into the places where they kept their power.

Jolie’s was at her heart. Logan’s was on his stomach, perhaps unsurprisingly for a werewolf. To my amusement, the vampire’s was on his forehead—clearly, he was the intellectual one of the group.

Everyone else’s was somewhere between the heart and the abdomen, the most common power centers, according to all the textbooks.

I watched carefully to see where my power connected with Layla.

At her heart.

I nodded to myself. Okay, then. We would have to find a way to work together. She was my roommate, my Academy packmate, and now a member of my heart’s pack.

So be it. If we made it through this rescue okay, I would work to befriend her.

Even if it meant Caleb and I never got to finish that kiss we had started over the summer.

I shoved the thought out of my mind. I could deal with all of that later. Right now, it was time to pull us all together and go get Ms. Hush.

My tentacles burrowed deep into the source of their strength, where it split like roots, curling around their strength and tying it to mine.

When I was hooked into everyone, I let the power guide me. It moved out of me, into them, moving through all the tentacles and roots as if they were veins and I was
